2011 Young Readers Election

This is the second year the Elections Office has facilitated an election for elementary and middle school students in Flagler County. These children who participate in the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program have the opportunity to vote with other students in their grade level in a statewide election for their favorite book during this school year. The Sunshine State Young Reader's Award Program is a statewide reading motivation program for students in grades 3 through 8. The program, which began in 1983, encourages students to read independently for personal satisfaction, based on interest rather than reading level.

This year, each student who voted for their favorite book received a voucher for a free ice cream cone at McDonald’s. Supervisor Weeks coordinated the free ice cream vouchers with McDonald's manager, Cindy Lott, and hopes the frozen treat will encourage students to keep reading and reward them for participating in the election.

For more information about the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program, please visit http://myssyra.org
Cumulative statewide Young Readers election results will be available on the SSYRA website after April 15, 2011.
